Age and Country of Origin Best Indicators for Hepatitis A Screening Needs

The best way to save costs while targeting people who may have a need for hepatitis A virus (HAV) vaccinations prior to travel is to screen them based on age and their country of origin, according to a new study.

The study, conducted at a Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in California, showed that costs of screening and vaccinating travelers could be maintained by following a few simple screening recommendations. Those recommendations were published in the Western Journal of Medicine ("Screening travelers for hepatitis A antibodies - An observational cost-comparison study of vaccine use," West J Med, 2000;173(5):325-329).
