New Egg-Free Flu Vaccine Promising For Those With Egg Allergy

Researchers in Austria have developed a unique flu vaccine that is made without egg proteins, which can trigger rare, but potentially fatal, allergic reactions in some people. "The development represents the newest and most successful approach to influenza vaccine development in 50 years," says Otfried Kistner, PhD. Kistner, a virologist with Baxter Hyland Immuno in Orth/Donau, Austria, and director of the research project, described the vaccine on April 2, 2001, at the 221st national meeting of the American Chemical Society.
