Aged Mice Only Partly Protected By Adjuvant-Combined Vaccine

by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - A study appearing in Vaccine has found that influenza vaccines confer only partial protection on some strains of older mice, but completely protect younger mice, suggesting a weakening of immune responses with age.

H. Asanuma and associates in Japan compared antibody responses after intranasal vaccination of two-month-old and 18-month-old BALB/c, C3H, and C57BL/6 (B6) mice that were immunized with 2.5 (mu)g protein of A/PR/8/34 (PR8) (H1N1) virus vaccine containing a cholera toxin adjuvant.
