Government health officials say they are stockpiling vaccine

Within the coming year, the U.S. government expects to stockpile 286 million doses of smallpox vaccine - enough to protect every U.S. citizen in case of a bioterrorist attack.

The news was presented at a community forum on smallpox vaccine use at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City in June 2002

The last natural case of smallpox in the United States was reported in 1977. Health authorities said in the event of a bioterrorist incident they would make smallpox vaccinations available to anyone who asks for it but they would not recommend having the general public vaccinated.
