Pneumococcal vaccination may help avoid recurrence of disease

by Lynn Yoffee, senior medical writer - Recurrences of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) are frequent in the adult population, even in the absence of severe immunosuppression or underlying lung abnormalities, according to a poster presentation at the 42nd Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy in San Diego, California.

Of the patients studied, Pneumococcus was the predominant causative pathogen found in pneumonia recurrences, said Beatriz Roson, of Hospital de Bellvitge, Barcelona, Spain.
