"The emergence and spread of drug-resistant parasites coupled with the absence of an effective vaccine makes malaria treatment more complicated, and thus the development of new antimalarial drugs is one of the urgent tasks in malaria research," said researchers in Japan.
"This review highlights lipid metabolism in Plasmodium parasite cells, the study of which would lead to providing new targets for therapeutic intervention," wrote Toshihide Mitamura and Nirianne Marie Q. Palacpac at Osaka University.
