"In contrast to simian immunodeficiency viruses (SIVs), which induce immunodeficiency over a one- to two-year period, highly pathogenic simian-human immunodeficiency viruses (SHIVs) cause an irreversible and systemic depletion of CD4+ T lymphocytes in macaque monkeys within weeks of inoculation.
