Infant immunization reaches record high in Hawaii

Hawaii's childhood immunization rate hit a record high of 82.8% in 2003, while the national rate last year was 81.3%, the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said.

Hawaii's previous rate was 80.9%.

State Health Director Chiyome Fukino said that public and private agencies and physicians in the islands renewed their efforts to increase childhood vaccination rates over the past 2 years.

State law mandates all children must be appropriately vaccinated before starting school. But health officials say many infants and toddlers remain at risk.
