Overcoming barriers to mucosal immunity reviewed

Researchers review methods for overcoming the barriers to mucosal immunity in a recent issue of Immunologic Research.

According to a study from Australia, "Vaccination represents one of the most efficacious and cost-effective medical interventions. It is the only medical intervention proven to eliminate disease at a global level. Many of the pathogens against which we most require adequate vaccines infect via the highly exposed mucosal surfaces."

"For this reason the mucosa is often considered the first, and sometimes only, line of defense," said Brent S. McKenzie and colleagues at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research....
