MedImmune evaluating whether it can make more inhalable vaccine

The maker of FluMist said it is looking into whether it can make more of the inhalable flu vaccine to help the federal government deal with a looming flu vaccine shortage.

Gaithersburg, Maryland-based MedImmune had planned to make 1 million to 2 million doses for this flu season after selling less than 500,000 in the product's disappointing first season.

However, that was before the British government announced that it had shut down a major flu-shot supplier, citing manufacturing problems at the Chiron Corp. factory in England where roughly 46 million doses destined for the United States had been made.
