Incidence of severe malaria useful as endpoint for vaccine trials

Researchers suggest that the incidence of severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria is a useful primary endpoint for vaccine efficacy trials.

"Potential endpoints for blood stage malaria vaccine efficacy trials include uncomplicated malaria disease, which is hard to differentiate from other febrile illnesses, and mortality, which requires prohibitively large sample sizes.
