Meningitis kills eight, mostly students, in eastern China

Bacterial meningitis has spread through a number of schools in eastern China, killing 8 people, and health officials were rushing to step up vaccinations but said there was no cause for panic.

The outbreak has affected schools in 11 cities in Anhui province in the past month, including the capital city of Hefei, the state-run newspaper China Daily reported, citing health officials.

Anhui alone has received reports of 61 cases of the disease since December 20, the report said, citing Du Changzhi, deputy director of the provincial health department. Forty-nine people have recovered, it said.
