New vaccine for bacterial meningitis

Experts say a new vaccine might prevent some cases of bacterial meningitis, possibly including the strain that led to the recent death of a Tucson high school soccer player.

The vaccine is expected to be available later this month in Arizona

through private physicians and a public program for low-income children.

Bacterial meningitis is an infection of the fluid around the brain and spinal cord.

Although relatively rare, about 2,600 people in the United States contract meningococcal disease each year, and up to 15% of them die even after being treated with antibiotics.
