Statement By Mike Leavitt, Secretary of Health and Human Services, on the Grants Awarded by the World Health Organization to Increase Global Manufacturing Capacity to Produce Influenza Vaccines

The World Health Organization (WHO) has taken an important step forward in the global effort to prepare for an influenza pandemic by awarding up to $15 million in grants to six nations to support the establishment or expansion of domestic manufacturing capacity for influenza vaccine. Once this production capacity is in place, these countries will be able to make seasonal influenza vaccine domestically under the standards of good manufacturing practices, to protect their populations. Some could be in a position also to export vaccine to their neighbors.
