Findings from Federal University of Minas Gerais in vaccinia virus reported



February 25th, 2009

"Vaccinia virus was used as vaccine to eradicate smallpox," researchers in Belo Horizonte, Brazil report.

"We report a zoonotic case of vaccinia virus infection in a 30-year-old patient who became infected after handling sick dairy cattle. The patient had inflamed lesions and systemic symptoms," wrote G.S. Trindade and colleagues, Federal University of Minas Gerais.

The researchers concluded: "Laboratory findings were indicative of down-modulated immune responses to the virus."
