"Streptococcus pneumoniae is an encapsulated pathogen that can cause invasive disease following colonization of the nasopharynx. Targeting colonization of mucosal surfaces may, therefore, be the best approach for vaccination to prevent pneumococcal invasive disease," scientists in the United States report.
