Malaria Kills 3,000 Children a Day; Walter Reed Army Institute of Research Deputy Commander Awarded World Service Medal by Kiwanis International for Work on Malaria Vaccine

Colonel Gray Heppner M.D., deputy commander of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) [www.wrair.army.mil], was recently honored by Kiwanis International for his role in the development of a promising vaccine against malaria. Heppner was presented the 2009 World Service Medal [http://kif.kiwanis.org/KIF/where/wsm.aspx].

The Kiwanis World Service Medal, established in 1985, recognizes individuals who devote a significant part of their lives to meeting the needs of others. One medal is awarded each year. Previous winners include Mother Teresa, Sir Roger Moore, Audrey Hepburn, Nancy Reagan and Rosalynn Carter.
