Outbreak reaching epidemic proportions, WHO says

Dengue fever is reaching epidemic proportions this year, mainly in Asia and Latin America, the World Health Organization (WHO) says.

There have been reports of a resurgence in the mosquito-borne disease in recent months, with major outbreaks in Brazil, other parts of Latin America and in Asia, WHO said.

"This year looks a bit like 1998; we had a pandemic and it affected much of the tropics, all more or less at the same time," noted Mike Nathan, communicable diseases specialist with WHO.

A record 1.2 million people were infected with dengue in 1998.
