"Accelerated Progression of Fibrosis in Liver Grafts Infected with Hepatitis C Virus."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 48th Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, held November 7-11, 1997 in Chicago, Illinois, "Following transplantation for HCV related liver failure, graft infection is almost invariable. However, clinical outcome may vary between very early graft loss due to HCV recurrence and minimal disease at ten years. In the present study we compared the stage of fibrosis (graded 0-5) in relation to duration of infection in 64 patients undergoing 81 transplant procedures between 1990 and 1997 with 271 chronic HCV carriers seen over the same period and biopsied because they were anti-HCV positive.
