Heteroduplex Mobility Analysis Can Identify Mixed Virus and Mixed-Strain Samples

As the international community turns its attention to the upcoming Olympics in Sydney, Australia, laboratory researchers at the Prince of Wales Hospital in that same city have developed a novel technique that can be used to identify and differentiate mixed virus and mixed strain infections.

The technique, called heteroduplex mobility analysis, was described in the journal Virology.

"Current methods for detection of mixed infection normally involve genotyping or cloning and DNA sequencing. These methods are not always accurate or sensitive at detecting mixed infection and cannot be used for large numbers of samples," the researchers commented...
