New Nipah Virus Shows Similarities to Hendra Virus

Preliminary investigation of the newly identified Nipah virus has shown that it shares many characteristics with Hendra virus, but it is a separate and distinct virus, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers.

"Recently, a new paramyxovirus, now known as Nipah virus (NV), emerged in Malaysia and Singapore, causing fatal encephalitis in humans and a respiratory syndrome in pigs," B.H. Harcourt and others in the Center's Respiratory and Enteric Viruses Branch reported in the journal Virology.
