Similarities Characterize Strains Detected in South American Virus Isolates

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) can be linked to two major types of viruses in South America: the Laguna Negra (LN) virus and the Andes (AND) virus.

More than 400 individuals have been identified with HPS in five of the major countries of South America since this disease was first observed in Patagonia in 1995.

According to researchers in Argentina, who conducted genotypic analysis and serotyping, patients who develop HPS in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay will often be infected with strains from either of the two types of viruses.
