Commercial Assays Not Specific Enough

by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - A comparison of six commercial enzyme immunoassays (EIAs) for the detection of tick-borne encephalitis reveals a lack of accuracy due to cross-reaction with other members of the Flaviviridae.

M. Niedrig and colleagues set out to compare EIA specificity for tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), a human flavivirus endemic in some parts of Europe and Asia. The EIAs typically are used to test for presence of the disease or the success of vaccination.
