Overexpression of HCV core protein promotes chronic infection

Hepatologists with the University of Dusseldorf have shown that "overexpression of hepatitis C virus core protein inhibits interferon-alpha-induced tyrosine phosphorylation and activation of STAT1 in hepatic cells."

The majority (80%) of patients newly infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) will go on to develop chronic infection. This led J.G.
