Active management of third stage of labor greatly reduces postpartum hemorrhage

A study conducted in Luanda, Angola, by Karolinska Institute public health researchers demonstrated that active management of the third stage of labor significantly reduces occurrence of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), the primary cause of maternal mortality worldwide.

This purpose of the study "was to introduce Uniject (a new disposable device for administration of 10 IU oxytocin) as part of active management of the third stage of labor (AMTL) and try to reduce PPH," wrote R.T. Strand and colleagues.
