Acupuncture, stabilizing exercises complement usual treatment in pregnant women

Acupuncture and stabilizing exercises complement standard treatment for pelvic girdle pain in pregnant women, say perinatologists.

Obstetrician/gynecologists in Sweden "[compared] the efficacy of standard treatment, standard treatment plus acupuncture, and standard treatment plus stabilizing exercises for pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy" in a randomized, single-blind, controlled trial."

Participants were 386 pregnant women presenting with pelvic girdle pain at one hospital and 27 maternity care centers in Gothenburg, Sweden. They were randomized to "treatment for 6 weeks with standard treatment (n=130), standard treatment plus acupuncture...
