California Department of Health launches newborn screening system

The California Department of Health announced the implementation of the Screening Information System (SIS), a prenatal and newborn screening program that will enable parents to diagnose and treat genetic disorders in their children at a much earlier age.

A pilot of the system run by the department's Genetic Disease Branch resulted in finding nine babies over 5 weeks with genetic disorders who now, with minor diet modifications, will lead normal lives. The SIS was developed by Deloitte Consulting LLP.
