Lack of regular screening accounts for many cervical cancer cases

Despite a significant decline over the last 60 years in the number of American women who develop cervical cancer, more than 10,000 still develop the potentially deadly disease every year. The two largest barriers to eliminating what is a preventable disease are a lack of regular screening among some women and an over-reliance on the Pap test among others, according to Digene Corp. A recent report published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that more than half (56%) of cervical cancer cases are due to a lack of screening and nearly one-third (32%) can be attributed to Pap detection failure.
