Governor of New Jersey Signs a Bill to Place Tax Checkoff for Cancer

Gov. Christie Whitman enacted legislation that will place a special checkoff on state income tax forms to allow New Jersey residents to contribute to breast cancer research.

Whitman says this is one bill she wishes was not necessary. The measure would also set up a New Jersey breast cancer research fund.

"I have to say in all honesty, this is the kind of bill that I wish I didn't have to sign," said Whitman. "I wish that 6,000 women a year in the state did not get breast cancer; I wish we did not rank third in the nation for the number of women taken from us every year from breast cancer.
