NCI Reports Increased Cancer Incidence since Mid-1970s

The incidence of cancer rose 18.6 percent in men and 12.4 percent in women from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s due mainly to large increases in breast, prostate and lung cancers in older Americans, according to a study published by the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI).

Susan S. Devesa, Ph.D., lead author of the study, which appears in the February 1, 1995, issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, said the increase in breast and prostate cancers is largely due to greater use of early detection techniques because the majority of new cases are being found at early stages of the diseases.
