For First Time, Dow Chemical Found Liable For Implant Problems

A jury's decision that Dow Chemical Corp. is partly liable for a woman's leaking breast implants could mean the company will have to contribute to a $4.2 billion settlement in a separate implant lawsuit.

The jury awarded $5.2 million to retired nurse Gladys Laas and her husband, Robert. It recommended that Dow Chemical pay 20 percent and that Dow Corning Corp., which made Laas' silicone implants, pay 80 percent. It was the first time Dow Chemical Corp. had been found liable in a breast implant lawsuit. Dow Corning is a joint venture of Dow Chemical and Corning Inc.
