Eight States To Participate In Mammography Study

For the next few years, most women who get mammograms in 24 eastern North Carolina counties will become part of a national study on breast cancer screening.

North Carolina is one of eight states chosen for the study, paid for mostly through federal grants. Other sites are in California, Colorado, Iowa, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Vermont and Washington.

Results should give researchers valuable insight about women who get mammograms and others who slip through the cracks. The study will also show what happens to women after mammography - and whether they're getting the proper follow-up care.
