House Committee Blocks HIV Testing For Pregnant Women

Even though most of her Republican colleagues voted against it in committee, Rep. Maureen Murphy promises to resurrect a bill requiring HIV testing for pregnant women.

"Good ideas don't die," said Murphy, of Evergreen Park. "I know public sentiment was on our side."

An earlier version of the bill would have forced all pregnant women to take the test, but Murphy bowed to demands for a refusal clause. Rep. Anne Zickus, R-Palos Hills, said she could not see why lawmakers and doctors maintained the opposition. "Those mothers have a responsibility to those babies," Zickus said.
