A Fatal Error: Chemotherapy Overdose Kills One, Injures Another

It was a mistake that left one 39-year-old breast cancer patient dead and a 52-year-old patient "chronically debilitated."

According to a recent report in The Boston Globe, doctors at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute prescribed a four-fold overdose of a toxic drug to a female cancer patient, a Globe health columnist who died December 3, 1994.

The same team of doctors gave the same overdose to a 52-year-old breast cancer patient. The woman, whose husband asked that she not be named, is in the Beth Israel Hospital. The newspaper said several sources described her as having serious, irreversible heart damage.
