Family Planning for Underserved Groups

While providing food, shelter and medical care are essential first steps in assisting refugees, reproductive health services are important to provide after basic needs are met, experts say in the Spring 1995, issue of Network, Family Health International's quarterly bulletin.

"Even in crisis situations, people are still sexually active, and thus, many are still exposed to unwanted pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases," says Beverly Tucker, an FHI associate director of field operations. Some refugees, she says, live for many years in refugee camps. Young people are often bored or lack structured activities, thereby increasing prospects for sexual encounters. ...
