Efficacy of Nonoxynol-9 for HIV Prevention Debated

Is the contraceptive nonoxynol-9 as effective as condoms in preventing HIV infection' That question was debated in the March 1995 issue of AIDS with researchers differing over whether the issue has been settled.

K.M. Wittkowski of Germany's Eberhard-Karls-University, claims that new evidence suggesting that nonoxynol-9 (N9) is as effective as condoms in preventing the spread of AIDS has been kept from women worldwide ("The Potential of Nonoxynol-9 for the Prevention of HIV Infection Reconsidered," AIDS, March 1995;9(3):310-311).
