Research Points to New Tests and Treatments

"If breast cancer is detected early, before it has spread to the lymph nodes, it can probably be cured with surgery alone," said Pathologist Noel Weidner, MD.

"Between 70 and 80 percent of these 'node negative' patients need no chemotherapy and, because of its inherent dangers, should avoid it. Unfortunately, the other 20 to 30 percent will certainly die without it. The difficulty, is in determining which kind of tumor a patient has."

Angiogenesis, Dr. Weidner believes, may provide pathologists with a valuable tool for predicting when chemotherapy is needed. One day, it may even provide a new avenue for slowing or halting the disease.
