Tobacco Causes Thousands of Fetal Deaths and Miscarriages

Mothers who smoke cause the deaths of nearly 6,000 babies and 115,000 fetuses in the United States every year, according to researchers who analyzed scores of studies taken over a 40-year period.

Their report, published in the April 1995 issue of the Journal of Family Practice, also found that mothers' smoking contributes to 53,000 annual cases of low birth-weight babies and 22,000 cases of babies who require intensive care at birth.
