Mammography Essential for Older Women, but Few are Getting Screened

Women aged 65-74 who are regularly screened by mammography have their cancers detected at a smaller size with less spread than those who are not screened, a new study of this age group shows.

This study is one of the first to focus on screening and this particular age group.

The study found that women who underwent regular screening (a mammogram at least every 18 months) had tumors that were about half the size (10.7 mm) of those who did not (20 mm), said Dr. Helena Gabriel, a radiologist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
