New Procedure Takes Less Time and Costs Thousands Less

Women with suspicious mammograms can now undergo a new, simple and relatively inexpensive procedure to determine if the suspicious mass on their mammogram is cancer, a study of 166 women shows.

The new procedure - ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (USFNAC) - takes only a few minutes and costs thousands of dollars less than current standard procedures.

USFNAC has been 100 percent accurate in diagnosing cancers, said Dr. Thomas G. Frazier, senior attending surgeon at the Bryn Mawr Hospital in Pennsylvania. This number is based on three-month follow-up of the patients, he told the American Radium Society at its annual meeting, held in...
