New Device May Insure Reliable Pap Test Results

A Milwaukee company whose lab technologist allegedly misread Pap smears that led to the deaths of two Wisconsin women, Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia, has begun testing a new device aimed at avoiding mistakes that may result from incomplete and/or inadequate screening of Pap smears.

The device, called Pathfinder, a microcomputer-based data manager from CompuCyte Corp., Cambridge, Massachusetts, is a fundamental breakthrough in improving the reliability of test results from microscopic examination of specimens, such as Pap smears, the company reports.
