AMA Calls for Voluntary HIV Screening of Pregnant Women

Voluntary HIV testing should be available to all pregnant women and the results should be available to physicians taking care of both mother and baby, the American Medical Association's policy-making arm decided at their 1995 annual convention.

Meeting in Chicago June 18-22, the AMA's House of Delegates stopped short of calling for the mandatory notification of all health care personnel of the mother's HIV-infected status, regardless of her wishes.

"To facilitate optimal medical care for both women and their infants, HIV antibody test results (both positive and negative) and associated management information should be available to the physicians...
