Council Members Attack Anti-AIDS Program for Prostitutes

An $80,000 grant to encourage prostitutes to use condoms and take more pride in themselves is a waste of money, two King County, Washington, Council members say.

Council members Jane Hague and Chris Vance sponsored a motion to prevent the county Health Department from accepting the grant for its proposed "HIV Prevention for Women in the Sex Industry" program.

Backers say the program would make prostitutes more aware of AIDS, encourage them to use condoms and raise their self-esteem.
