Vaginal Microflora and Bacterial Vaginosis in Pregnant Women: Prevalence and Pregnancy Outcomes in Japan

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 95th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology, held May 21-25, 1995, in Washington, D.C., "The vaginal microflora of 118 pregnant women attending at an antenatal clinic in Japan was investigated for the presence of bacterial vaginosis (BV), BV-associated microorganisms, and its association with pregnancy outcomes. BV was diagnosed by Gram stain of vaginal smears, utilizing the scoring system proposed by Nugent et al. The mean gestational age at enrollment was 30 weeks. The prevalence of BV was 13.6%.
