Group Offers Support, Information To Hispanic Women

T.N. remembers being so depressed she thought she was going to die.

Living with breast cancer and facing an operation to remove the cancerous tissue, she had no one to talk to in her native Spanish. That was when she found the Mensajeras de Salud - the Messengers of Health.

Started 4 1/2 years ago as a research project at the University of Arizona, the program is an educational and awareness program for Latinas. When the research funding ran out in 1993, the YWCA of Tucson picked up the program.

There are 11 mensajeras. They spend eight to 10 hours a week walking door to door in eight predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods,...
