WHO Continues Its Battle Against FGM

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 85 to 115 million girls and women in the world today have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM) and suffer from its adverse health effects.

Every year an estimated 2 million young girls undergo this practice, which causes serious and often permanent damage to their health.

The short term effects include severe haemorrhage, shock and infection, all of which may lead to death. Longer term health effects include recurrent urinary tract infections, chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, psycho-affective and sexual dysfunction, and obstructed labor, which is an important cause of maternal...
