Inhibition of Urokinase Has Potential as Treatment Modality

As the expression of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) is required for the spread of ovarian cancer, its subsequent inhibition may prove to be a feasible treatment modality in humans, a recent study suggests.

uPA is a protease involved in the process of cell migration and tissue remodelling. It has been found in the ascitic fluid of advanced ovarian cancer patients. It is not found in non-malignant ascitic fluid (i.e., from liver cirrhosis). Prospective clinical studies have shown that the presence of uPA in cancerous tissue extracts was a strong prognostic indicator for relapse-free and overall survival of patients with ovarian, breast or gastric...
