Management of Herpesvirus Infections in Pregnancy and the Neonate

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 19th International Congress of Chemotherapy, held July 16-21, 1995, in Montreal, Ontario, Canada, "Neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection can have a severe physical, psychological and social impact on both the infant and the family. The incidence varies between countries, from 1 in 60000 births in the UK compared with 1 in 2000 births in some parts of the USA. HSV is usually transmitted from mother to child during labour as a result of direct contact with infected maternal genital secretions.
