Minority Women Avoiding Medical Exams

Minority women are avoiding cancer-screening exams because of several cultural and social barriers, according to a survey made by two Ohio state agencies. Language and transportation barriers along with embarrassment play a part in keeping African-American, Hispanic, Asian and American Indian women from the screenings, said the survey undertaken by the Ohio Department of Health and the Ohio Commission on Minority Health. "We don't understand the people we are trying to deal with," said Cheryl Boyce, executive director of the commission. "And we end up offending the heck out of them."
