According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the International Symposium on Clinical Immunology, held July 20-23, 1995, in San Francisco, California, "Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a family of over 70 distinct genotypes associated with a variety of clinical disorders including genital warts, laryngeal papillomatosis and anogenital cancer. An effective vaccine against HPV could mean a virtual end to cervical cancer, the second most common cause of cancer deaths in women worldwide.
